As Figure 4.7 illustrates, the distribution of contraceptive use by years since first marriage reflects this relationship: recently married women, and those who have been married for less than five years, and hence need to ‘confirm’ their identity, are least likely to use contraception.

Furthermore, the ideology of ‘motherhood’ may also affect the type of contraception that a woman may choose. Not only are abortions shunned for religious reasons, but the social stigma that would be attached to a mother who would resort to such measures is a strong deterrent. That abortions are not a contraceptive option is demographically important, because it implies that if ‘accidental’ pregnancies were to occur, they cannot be terminated.44
